More than a shelter.

More than a shelter.

We're a community that refuses to leave anyone behind.

"Homelessness doesn't happen because someone gave up on life. It happens when life gets too hard, too fast, with too little support."

Helping Hands of Springfield serves single adults 18 and older who are experiencing homelessness in Central Illinois. We don't just offer a bed for the night — we walk with people toward the life they deserve.

When Our Community Shows Up, Everything Changes

When you give your time, your talent, or your treasure — our clients feel it. Not as charity. As proof that people still believe in each other. That care is real. That change is possible.

"You don't have to have all the answers. You just have to open the door."

The spirit behind Helping Hands, since 1989

It Started on a Cold Night

In 1989, up to 50 people huddled under downtown awnings in Springfield, Illinois, sleeping in doorways, warming themselves together until the morning came. There was no shelter. No safety net. Just cold pavement and nowhere to go.

Mayor Ossie Langfelder and a coalition of local citizens, members of the Interfaith Coalition and Ministerial Alliance, decided that wasn't good enough. They passed a hat around a room. Collected enough to incorporate. Rented a space near the YWCA.

No beds. No staff. No grants. Just people with a hot cup of coffee, an open door, and a chair to sit on.

That was enough to begin. And it was enough to change lives.

From a Rented Room to a Permanent Home

Twenty-five years after that first cold night, Helping Hands moved into its own building, a permanent home designed not just for shelter, but for transformation. A place where people could access real programs, real support, and real paths forward.

Today, we address homelessness on every level: emergency shelter, rapid rehousing, supported housing, and case management. We don't just help people survive the night, we help them build a life.

"Every person who walks through our doors has a story. Our job is to help them write the next chapter."
